Aaron
Aaron was a young child when he was a pedestrian struck by a car in 1986. The accident left Aaron in a coma for 18 days.
Post-Injury/Pre-Life Skills Village
Over the years, Aaron was involved in multiple inpatient and outpatient rehab programs. While his physical recovery was complete, he had decreased short-term memory skills and fluctuating concentration levels. His behavioral issues continued even as Aaron sought out employment and hindered his education. His determination to overcome these obstacles led him to complete secondary school and press on through college. During this time, he was also employed at numerous jobs as a "laborer."
Post Injury/Life Skills Village
Through the Life Skills Village Community Reintegration Day Program, Aaron was able to focus on improving his impulsive behavior and learn to function both independently and as part of a team. For the last several years, he has been competitively employed as a physical therapy assistant. He has also been able to develop and maintain a long-term relationship. While Aaron certainly worked hard to find and lead the life he desired, he makes time to return to Life Skills Village as a guest speaker to share his experience with current clients. He articulates his message with the force of passion and belief behind each word: "You CAN live a normal life with a brain injury." He encourages clients to work hard in the day program and not to allow set backs to deter them from returning to and working the program to their advantage. "Everyone is different. So what worked for me might not work for you. The important thing is - you keep trying."
